Today, cosmetic dentistry is more popular than ever, from whitening and shaping to closing spaces and replacing teeth. We offer numerous cosmetic dentistry services.
If your teeth are discolored, misshaped or crooked, their appearance can be improved by placing a veneer on the surface of the affected teeth. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or teeth that are chipped or worn may also consider veneers.
Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic cemented over the front of your teeth to change their color or shape. Little or no anesthesia is needed to apply veneers. Veneers have a longer life expectancy and color stability than bonding, and are resistant to permanent staining from coffee, tea, or even cigarettes.
Crowns and Bridgework
Crowns restore a tooth’s function and appearance when decay has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed. Crowns are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse, or when an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also can be applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural appearance.
Crowns are synthetic caps, usually made of a material like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.
Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, but they are quite different. Veneers are typically applied only to relatively small areas.
With proper care, a good quality crown can last up to eight years or longer. Certain behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly shorten the life of a crown. Moreover, eating brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or even damage the crown. It is very important to floss in the area of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of debris around the restoration.
Bridges are custom made appliances that replace a section of missing teeth. Bridges are barely noticeable and can restore the natural contour of teeth as well as the proper bite relationship between upper and lower teeth.
Bridge appliances are usually made from porcelain, gold alloys or a combination of materials.
Whitening procedures can restore the smile of people with stained, dull, or discolored teeth resulting from the effects of aging and abuse from food and tobacco stains.
Some commercially available "whitening toothpastes" can be somewhat effective at removing stains and making teeth a few shades brighter. However, many of these products have abrasive substances that can actually erode your tooth's enamel.
Professional whitening performed by our office is considered to be the most effective and safest method; done properly, tooth whitening can last as long as five years.
Cosmetic bonding is a process in which a tooth-colored resin material is applied and then “bonded” to the tooth to improve the person’s smile. It is one of the easiest and least expensive cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic bonding can generally be done in one office visit, unless several teeth are involved. Bonding also requires removal of less tooth enamel than other procedures.
Consider bonding to repair decayed, chipped or cracked teeth, to improve the appearance of discolored teeth or to change the shape of teeth.
Cosmetic contouring can improve the appearance of fractured, worn, chipped or irregular front teeth. These conditions may be caused by overlapping or slight rotation of the teeth, uneven wear, or teeth that don’t have their biting edges in harmony.
Cosmetic contouring utilizes a polishing instrument to eliminate worn edges or small chips in your front teeth and to reshape them for a more pleasing appearance. Cosmetic contouring can often be done in one visit and can last as long as the teeth. Of course, this will not prevent future chips or damage.
Many people do not like the appearance of amalgam or silver fillings in their mouth. Cosmetic fillings, also called tooth-colored fillings or white fillings, are fillings that match natural tooth color and appearance. Cosmetic fillings seamlessly blend with your natural teeth. Tooth-colored fillings can also be used to change the size, color or shape of your teeth. They can also be used to close gaps between teeth, repair chipped teeth or make teeth appear straighter and more even. Cosmetic fillings can also be used to replace old, silver amalgam fillings.
